2014 saw the first annual Varsity Henley Swim. The Henley Classic is a 2.1km endurance event held at the Henley Royal Regatta course, very early on the Sunday morning before the Wednesday start of the Royal Regatta. The event is a celebration of mid-summer. 4 men and 4 women from each of Oxford and Cambridge make up two teams that battle it out over the course, aiming to have the lowest cumulative time and be crowned overall winner. In 2017, Cambridge took victories across the board for the first time since the inaugural event started.
In 2025 and 2026 the event was moved to South East Open Water Regionals at the end of June. Both of these years saw Cambridge coming out on top, in particular in 2026 Cambridge won by over 15 minutes. The newer format is longer than at Henley at 3km.
2027 Match
The 2027 open water varsity match is still TBC. Since there will be a Channel Relay this year, the Varsity team will be made up of the Channel Relay team too, with trials for both taking place in early October in Cambridge.
