Swimming

Success in swimming has been overwhelming, with 15 records broken so far and still a term to go! Please check out our records section to see if yours are still standing…! Achievement has trickled down throughout the club, with massive increases in the size of the seconds squad.

“We started off the academic year strong with a record number of swimmers attending BUCS, with four Men’s and Women’s relay teams. Going into our first ever Lent preseason [usually only attended by blues] we had over half the squad in attendance, a great turnout to start off the countdown to Varsity.
Varsity was a very close call and was our closest match in the last three years. We had many PBs across the team and saw a couple of records such as the 50 fly absolutely smashed.
We’re incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished, both in terms of competitions, training quality and team spirit, and look forward to seeing what the team will achieve in the following year and Varsity.”

Aquatics GB championships 2026

A team of 3 of our female blues swum at the Aquatics GB championships this April. Standout swims washed in from Rebecca Keetley coming 34th in the 50 breast, Emilia Magliocco coming 32nd in the 50 backstroke and Sophie Moore qualifying for a whole four of the B finals (50/200 backstroke and 200 IM and breaststroke).

Cuppers

Those who are still riding on the college patriotism will be interested to hear that overall swimming cuppers was won by Jesus college, while the women’s division was won by St Johns and the men’s division was won by a (somewhat controversial) joint team of Downing, Queen’s, Fitzwilliam and Pembroke. In the typical competitive spirit of cuppers, riotous accounts of cheating have been reported from several teams and a few spectators ended up somewhat clothed in the Leys Pool.

Water Polo

This year has been busy with the Water Polo team in constant transit between Northampton School for Boys and Queens Road Cambridge. In total the women played 8 matches while the men’s blues and seconds teams played 20 between them. There was much success in the league with the Men winning the open midlands tier 1, and the women coming second in the female division.

According to the Cambridge blues committee, this means both the men’s and women’s first team are allowed to award 7 full blues and 7 half blues. Light blue blazers, tadpoles ties and many tomahawks are on the horizon!

The Women’s captain, Sarah, suggested that her proudest moment of the year was watching the seconds win their varsity match after most players being new to the sport and only joining at the start of Lent. While the men’s captain, Ben, was most impressed by the grit of the firsts beating Birmingham to win their league title after being 9-4 down at half time.

In January, the teams also travelled to Malta for the annual water polo tour!

Cuppers

Water Polo cuppers consisted of 6 teams, 2 of which were local, 3 were mixed Cambridge university teams and 1 was a Dutch team on a training camp.

From the colleges, water polo cuppers was championed by a mixed team of Jesus and Magdalene. In the overall competition our Cambridge University teams managed to take 2nd, 4th and 6th place. Some fantastic goals were scored by recruits and current players alike making us even more hopeful for next season.
