Men’s Water Polo 2s: Cambridge 14 – Oxford 3
The fourth fixture of the season saw a confident Cambridge 2nd team enter the pool, having convincingly won all three previous encounters. Arguably one of the strongest 2nd teams in recent memory, the Light Blues surged to a 4–1 lead in the first quarter – the only goal conceded coming from a minor lapse at the end of the period.
Oxford posed no serious threat, with Cambridge relentlessly attacking and maintaining a defensive shutout for the majority of the match. The pattern continued throughout, as wave after wave of Light Blue pressure overwhelmed the opposition. The game finished in a commanding 14–3 win for Cambridge, clearly highlighting the gulf in quality between the sides.
Men’s Blues: Cambridge 15 – Oxford 8
The Men’s Blues rounded off the evening with a dominant display, comfortably dispatching Oxford in a scoreline that arguably flattered the opposition.
A slightly tentative first quarter saw Cambridge adjusting to attacking the shallow end, while Oxford capitalised on a couple of speculative long-range efforts. Nevertheless, the Light Blues led 3–2 by the break and never looked back.
Oxford’s tactic of lobbing long-range shots became increasingly ineffective in the second quarter, as Cambridge took control in all areas of the pool and extended their lead to 8–3 by half-time.
Attacking the shallow end again in the third quarter proved a little awkward, with both sides scoring once. But once play returned to the deep end, Cambridge found their rhythm again. A dominant fourth quarter saw the Blues race to a 13–6 lead before calmly seeing out the match, securing a decisive 15–8 victory.
A comprehensive team performance sealed a superb result on the day – and capped off an excellent season – with an emphatic win over the Other Place.
