Trials to join the water polo teams take place early in Michaelmas term (October), or contact the captains to join at some other time of the year.
Both teams train roughly four times a week. Each team has two water polo sessions, and one dry-land session every week. The men’s and women’s teams come together every week for an additional swimming session, followed by a hearty breakfast. These sessions are organized outside regular lecture hours so that no one has to miss them for academics.
An additional swim set or dry-land work out is encouraged, and several small groups often meet up to complete it at a time that suits them.
All training takes place at the Leys School in Cambridge.
Every winter the Water Polo squads travel abroad to train against high quality players in preparation for the important matches that occur in Lent Term. Generally the trip begins soon after New Year to end just before the next term starts. Recent destinations have included Budapest (tour report), Barcelona, Amsterdam, Palma, Pisa and Turin.
The tour provides a great opportunity for members of both teams to get to know each other better, and allows players to really develop their skills without the academic deadlines present during term time.
